Supporting the Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality

The Society for Privacy and Confidentiality Research (SPCR) was formed in 2024 in order to provide a sustainable financial and organizational infrastructure for the Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality (JPC). In time, SPCR may expand its activities, but for the near future, its focus is on JPC.

The Society

The Society is an independent not-for-profit organization, based in Philadelphia, PA. It holds 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. Governance is vested in a Board of Directors, whose founding members are:

  • John M. Abowd (Cornell University, President)

  • Alan F. Karr (Temple University, Treasurer/Secretary)

  • Cynthia Dwork (Harvard University)

  • Jerome P. Reiter (Duke University)

  • Aleksandra Slavković (Penn State University)

The Editor-in-Chief of JPC, Editorial Board members and supporting personnel are appointed by the Board of Directors. In addition, SPCR operates a Scientific Advisory Council, comprised of representatives of Organizational Members and elected members, that supports the Board of Directors and JPC Editorial Board.

The Journal

The Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality is an open-access, multi-disciplinary journal whose purpose is to facilitate the coalescence of research methodologies and activities in the areas of privacy, confidentiality, and disclosure limitation. The JPC seeks to publish a wide range of research and review papers, not only from academia, but also from government (especially official statistical agencies) and industry, and to serve as a forum for exchange of views, discussion, and news.

Theory and Practice of Differential Privacy Workshop

The Theory and Practice of Differential Privacy Workshop Series is an independent workshop series supported by SPCR via the Journal. The workshop is intended to be an occasion for researchers from different research areas, such as computer science, statistics, and data analysis, to discuss the recent developments in the theory and practice of differential privacy. JPC publishes selected, expanded, and peer-reviewed workshop papers from each workshop, under the editorial supervision of one of the TPDP organizers.

SUPPORTING SPCR

SPCR urgently needs the support of the privacy and confidentiality research community, through multiple pathways:

Other changes include the implementation of three-year terms for members of the Editorial Board, forthcoming publication charges, as well as SPCR memberships. The entire issue can be found at https://doi.org/10.29012/jpc.v15i1.

JPC Publication Charges

Effective January 1, 2025, JPC will charge $500 for each paper that is published. These fees are both modest in comparison to many other open access journals and necessary in order to ensure long-term financial viability. SPCR members are eligible for reduced publication fees.

Searching for Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality

Posted 2024-09-01 00:00:00 +0000

The Society of Privacy and Confidentiality Research (SPCR), publisher of the Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality (JPC), seeks applications and nominations for the Editor-in-Chief, for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2025, or as soon thereafter as mutually convenient.

The Editor-in-Chief is appointed by and responsible to the SPCR Board of Directors, leads the Editorial Board, oversees the Managing Editors, and sets the tone and emphases of the JPC. Those who have served previously as Editor-in-Chief are the late Stephen Fienberg, John Abowd and Cynthia Dwork. Under their leadership, JPC has matured into part of the scientific infrastructure in privacy and confidentiality research, especially by bridging the multiple contributing disciplines. JPC has been and will remain an open access journal. Currently, there are approximately 45 submissions per year, of which 12 are published.

Applicants should send a letter of interest and CV to eic_search@journalprivacyconfidentiality.org. Nominations may be sent to the same address. The deadline for both is October 31, 2024. Materials received later than that date will be considered at the sole discretion of the Search Committee.
